animaná is a powerful example of how one person’s passion can impact countless lives and help shape new futures

Adriana Marina - economist and founder of animaná and the NGO Hecho x Nosotros - grew up surrounded by Patagonia’s natural landscapes and native wildlife in Santa Cruz, Argentina. Beyond the region’s beauty, Adriana also witnessed social inequality affecting rural communities, labor-related conflicts, and the gradual loss of Andean craftsmanship driven by migration to cities.

With the dream of creating a project that would rethink fashion through a respectful and ethical lens, Adriana founded animaná in 2009. Today, Animaná is a sustainable luxury brand that crafts garments from natural fibers sourced in Patagonia and the Andes, with the purpose of preserving local communities, caring for the environment, and generating local prosperity.

How? By training artisans and producers, prioritizing sustainable production processes, and building an ethical, transparent, and responsible value chain.

That’s how animaná was born—meaning “a place in the sky” in the Kakán language. animaná is a certified B Corporation with triple impact - social, environmental, and economic - committed to creating added value in local communities through fair trade, while striving for balance between the textile industry, environmental care, and ethical labor.

Today, animaná collaborates with more than 500 artisans from Andean communities who create a wide range of garments, including sweaters, cardigans, ponchos, ruanas, shirts, blankets, shawls, scarves, dresses, pants, and more.

From 2015 to 2019, animaná had a boutique in Paris, France, thanks to the invaluable support of Dominique Peclers - an international fashion expert with over 50 years of experience in the luxury market -who fell in love with the brand.

animaná and Hecho x Nosotros: Working together to foster global education and inspire systemic change

In 2009, alongside animaná, Adriana Marina founded the nonprofit organization Hecho x Nosotros, which holds consultative status with the United Nations. The organization was created to further transform the sustainable fashion paradigm and to propose a new way of understanding the textile industry - one centered on quality, craftsmanship, and ethical labor.

Hecho x Nosotros focuses on positioning fashion not only as a driver of change and local development, but also as a tool to educate and share the principles of sustainable fashion. The organization works to create channels that connect ethical fashion initiatives in Latin America with international markets, promote collaborative networks that support the creation and dissemination of knowledge, and prioritize ethical working practices - contributing to a shift in sustainable fashion through real-world example.

Hecho x Nosotros is therefore the platform that enables us to empower artisans and preserve collective memory, culture, and traditional knowledge.

Through both projects, Adriana pursues a clear goal: to revalue the camelid fiber value chain and work toward a fashion industry that is more ethical, transparent, and inclusive.

The role of local communities

Since its beginnings in 2009, Adriana has brought together cooperatives, artisans, and producers, building partnerships with some of the finest craftspeople in the Andes and establishing direct collaboration with each local community. Thanks to this holistic, intermediary-free approach, the Andean communities Animaná works with have tripled their production capacity, achieved higher incomes, and transformed artisan families into local entrepreneurs. This has helped drive both economic and human development within these communities—restoring pride and honoring the value of their ancestral wisdom.

Did you know women represent 85% of all weavers?

Women are at the heart of Animaná and Hecho x Nosotros’ sustainable business model. Through their work, many have been able to support their families, open bank accounts, access healthcare, and achieve greater independence—building confidence and self-esteem both professionally and personally.
These initiatives are designed to drive systemic change and transform the ecosystem through meaningful collaboration between artisans, designers, professionals, businesses, and consumers. That’s why Animaná and Hecho x Nosotros work to raise awareness around sustainable development and guide the fashion industry toward a more respectful path—one that honors both the environment and the people behind each product, while encouraging conscious consumption and growing global demand for ethical fashion.
You can be part of this change, too.
